Two pedestrians were taken to the hospital Tuesday evening after being struck by a pickup truck at North Road and the Lougheed Highway on the Burnaby-Coquitlam border.

In a statement to CBC, Burnaby RCMP identified the pedestrians as women. They said the driver remained on scene, and the cause of the collision is under investigation.

Police are asking people to avoid driving near the area as traffic in all directions has been affected.

Cpl. Mike Kalanj, a spokesperson for the Burnaby RCMP, says police responded to the incident around 5:20 p.m.

“Just avoid the area altogether. Police are going to be there for quite some time this evening.”

B.C. Emergency Health Services confirmed in a statement to CBC paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to two patients on scene, who were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
