A 22-year-old woman has died after falling from a slackline at a popular climbing area near Squamish, according to B.C. RCMP.

In a statement issued Saturday evening, Squamish RCMP said they were called to Chek Canyon Recreation Area around 12:30 p.m. on Friday following reports that a woman had fallen from a slackline — a tightrope-like webbing used by climbers for balance and recreation.

Due to the difficult terrain at the bottom of the canyon, police say Squamish Search and Rescue was called in to assist with the recovery.

The B.C. Coroners Service is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

Authorities have not released her identity.

Victim services was present at the scene to support several individuals who witnessed the incident, according to RCMP.

“Anyone affected by this incident is encouraged to reach out to victim services for support and assistance,” the statement said.

Chek Canyon Recreation Area, located just north of Squamish, is known for its steep terrain with about 100 climbing routes for both beginners and expert climbers.
