With Trudeau on the way out, there’s been a swing in the polls
The Conservatives had a massive lead in the polls for the better part of the last two years. In January, CBC’s Poll Tracker suggested a Tory victory would’ve been a certainty.
But something rare started happening a few weeks ago: The polls started to shift, quickly and dramatically.
An Ipsos poll conducted between Feb. 21 and 24 showed the Liberals ahead for the first time in years, erasing a 26-point Conservative lead that the firm tracked six weeks earlier.
Philippe Fournier, an analyst with 338Canada.com, told our colleague Darren Major the sudden Liberal gains could be attributed to three factors: Trudeau announcing he would be stepping down, interest in the party’s leadership race and the return of Trump.
As of Sunday, polls suggest the Conservatives are still heavily favoured to win the most seats — but the odds they secure a majority government are little better than a coin flip.
