Homicide investigators are looking into the death of a person whose body was found following a fire in Langley, B.C., on Friday morning.

RCMP say they received reports of a blaze in the 20500 block of 56 Avenue in Langley’s city centre just before 7:30 a.m. PT.

One person was found dead inside the home — a second-storey unit located above ground-floor commercial properties — after firefighters extinguished the flames.

“At this early stage of the investigation, it is unknown how the individual died, and their death is being treated as suspicious until deemed otherwise,” said Langley RCMP Sgt. Zynal Sharoom in a statement Saturday.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the file.

A CBC News reporter on the scene Friday morning asked firefighters for comment, but was directed to RCMP.

Police say anyone who has information on the fire or the person’s death should contact them at 1-877-551-4448 or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
