Italy’s Federica Brignone won the giant slalom event at the alpine skiing world championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria, on Thursday.

Brignone posted a two-run combined time of two minutes 22.71 seconds, just nine-10ths of a second ahead of New Zealand’s Alice Robinson, who took the silver medal.

American Paula Moltzan (+2.62) rounded out the podium in bronze-medal position.

Britt Richardson, of Canmore, Alta., finished 3.89 seconds behind Brignone’s time to claim a 10th-place result. Fellow Canadian Val Grenier (+4.66), of St-Isidor, Ont., finished in 14th place.

Defending champion Mikaela Shiffrin sat out the event as she said she was not ready yet to race giant slalom following a crash in November.

Shiffrin won the world title in 2023 and has been on the podium in GS at every worlds since 2017.

The world championships continue on Friday with the men’s giant slalom event.
