Carney wants the government to spend less
In his opening remarks, Carney said his government will be focused on two main priorities: the first of which is protecting Canadian workers in the face of U.S. tariff threats.
But the second, he said, is “Growing this great country by putting more money in Canadians’ pockets. By ensuring that government spends less so Canada can invest more.”
That’s a line that could conceivably have been borrowed from a Poilievre stump speech. But Carney emphasized the “positivity” of his approach.
In an apparent shot at the Conservative leader, whom he did not mention by name, he said: “Negativity won’t win a trade war.”
Poilievre is scheduled to speak in about 45 minutes in downtown Ottawa.
