N.B. Power sent 27 crews to Ontario on Friday to assist with power restoration efforts after a week of ice, wind and rain. More than 100,000 customers in the province remain without power.
Central and northern parts of the province were hit with an ice storm last weekend followed by wind and rain earlier this week.
According to Ontario’s utility company, Hydro One, there were 102,000 customers without power in the province this morning. Crews have restored power to more than 93 per cent of customers, but new outages are still being reported.
Susan Holt took to social media on Saturday to thank N.B. Power crews. She said “good neighbours help each other out,” in reference to Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
N.B. Power sent dozens of workers to Ontario. It is not known how long they will be needed.
N.B. Power wasn’t able to confirm exactly how many individuals made the trip.
A spokesperson for the utility said: “We know how difficult and labour-intensive restoration work can be following an ice storm and are proud to help our fellow Canadians.”
N.B. Power and Quebec Hydro are the only out-of-province help. Through the Canadian Mutual Assistance Group, 29 utility partners are helping in Ontario. There are a total of 4,000 crew members working to restore power.
Hydro One requested help from N.B. Power and the other utilities. As part of the program, Hydro One will pay for their services.
