Conan O’Brien shows his chops as host
It’s honestly the surprise of the night that O’Brien hasn’t hosted these awards before. He started out with the joke we all knew was coming: a skit that showed him emerging from Demi Moore’s back, a reference to The Substance, about a woman who uses a miracle drug to become younger.
From there, he had all the crowd-pleasing jokes — which cleverly wove in the dizzying number of scandals going into the awards. He built in jokes about the Catholic thriller Conclave potentially mirroring the Pope’s current medical crisis, and an extended reference to Karla Sofía Gascón’s racist tweet debacle. After noting that Anora used the f-word 479 times — which was still three times fewer than Gascón’s publicist — he pointed the camera directly at her. Addressing her personally, he advised if she chose to tweet about him, “Remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
He moved on from there to bring up The Brutalist’s use of AI, a skit where a hoodie-wearing Adam Sandler hugged Chalamet, to a more tame joke showing actors’ old headshots. Eli Glasner back in the press room in L.A. let us know the laughter is loud, and the jokes are killing.
