B.C.’s police oversight agency is investigating after a person was fatally shot by officers during an attempted arrest in Surrey, B.C., on Friday night.

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) said officers went to a home near the intersection of 139 Street and 100 Avenue around 9 p.m. PT to arrest a person who had an outstanding warrant against them.

According to police, the person — whose identity has not been disclosed — confronted officers with a weapon, and police fired at them with weapons, including a duty pistol.

The person later died despite paramedics’ efforts, according to SPS.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which investigates incidents resulting in serious harm or death where police are involved, is now looking into the case.

“Initial investigative steps will confirm the details of the interaction between the person and officers, and determine if police actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances,” reads an IIO statement.
