There is no risk to the public after a shelter in place warning for part of Saint John was ended at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday after being in place for around three hours.
Saint John police said a woman is in custody and a victim remains in hospital in critical condition after a shooting on Mabee Road near Rothesay and Highway 111, about 10 kilometres away from where residents had been initially told to shelter in place earlier in the evening.
Man arrived at hospital with gunshot wound
Police had responded to a report of shots fired on Mabee Road at 5:12 p.m., according to a news release issued shortly after the alert ended.
An officer was at a local hospital for an unrelated matter around 5:35 p.m. when a man arrived with a gunshot wound, the release said. The man told the officer he had been shot “by an unidentified person while walking in a wooded area within Rockwood Park.”
Police then evacuated the park and alerted nearby residents to shelter in place, the release said.
Based on the investigation, police said there is no longer a threat to the public and people no longer have to shelter in place.
“As a result of further investigation police were able to establish a connection between the victim that was shot and the report of shots fired on the Mabee Road,” the release said.
Police remained on the scene at Mabee Road and continued to investigate. Anyone who was a witness or has video footage in the area was has been asked to contact Saint John police.
