Fire crews are still battling a structure fire in Lamèque, in northeastern New Brunswick, that started at around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday and has resulted in one injury.

“The burning building previously belonged to the peat company Sungro. Since this fall, it has been owned by Xtreme Composite, a company specializing in plastic management and recycling and pallet production,” Radio-Canada reports.

Florian Larocque, Lamèque’s assistant fire chief, said a member of the Ste-Marie-St-Raphael fire department was taken to the hospital after falling on ice.

About 30 firefighters responded to the call from Ste-Marie-St Raphael, Shippagan, Miscou, and the Municipality of Hautes-Terres.

Photos posted within the first two hours of the fire on social media showed large clouds of dark smoke.

Larocque said while the blaze is now under control, it’s expected to continue burning throughout the day and possibly overnight.

Because of the burning plastic they had to use foam to get the fire under control, he said.

“That’s not a regular fire.”

The cause of the fire is unknown, he said.
