Police say charges have been approved against a man suspected in two homicides in Metro Vancouver.

Nahom Gizaw, 21, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and remains in custody, the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said Friday.

Maanav Kinkar, 18, was found dead at Surrey’s Hazelnut Meadows Park on May 26, 2022.

On March 3, 2023, 22-year-old Caleb Morin, was fatally stabbed at a residence near Boundary Road and East 45th Avenue in Vancouver.

Vancouver police said the two victims “had no connection,” but investigators managed to link a suspect to both cases.

Homicide detectives arrested Gizaw Thursday near East 29th Avenue and Rupert Street following a two-year investigation by Vancouver police and the RCMP’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), according to a VPD statement.

“Our teams worked diligently and in close partnership to solve these crimes and provide closure to the victims’ families and our communities,” VPD Const. Tania Visintin said in the statement.

“While these homicides were not connected, the co-operation between our agencies led to the evidence we needed to make this arrest.”
