A youth has been convicted of manslaughter in the 2022 stabbing death of a man in Surrey, B.C.
Leroy Billy,44, was found by police with stab wounds near 184 Street and Fraser Highway around 10 p.m. PT on Aug. 18, 2022. He died later that day in the hospital.
The convicted teen, whose name is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this month and is scheduled to appear for a sentencing hearing in March, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Friday.
IHIT says the teen was 17 years old at the time he was charged on August. 18, 2023, exactly a year after the crime.
In the investigation following the attack, police said they believed the victim had been swarmed by a group of youth after exiting a bus, and fatally stabbed.
“Mr. Billy died tragically from a senseless attack on the street,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT in a statement Friday.
“Mr. Billy’s life was cut short suddenly as a result of the accused’s actions and our thoughts continue to be with his family as the court proceedings come to a conclusion.”
