Thousands of N.B. Power customers are without electricity as high winds batter much of New Brunswick.

Northeastern parts of the province are under wind warnings, but power outages are scattered across the province.

As of 4:30 p.m. AT, N.B. Power reported 18,211 customers without power on its outage tracker. The number rose to more than 20,000 by evening.

Environment Canada issued a wind warning early Sunday morning for the northeast corner of the province.

The Acadian Peninsula and Bathurst and Chaleur region are expected to get maximum wind gusts northwesterly up to 90 km/h. The winds are supposed to diminish this evening.

The warning said “strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring” and that utility outages may occur.

High wind will also impact all of P.E.I and northern parts of Nova Scotia. There were more than 13,000 Nova Scotia Power customers without power late Sunday afternoon.

The Confederation Bridge has posted a wind warning advisory.
