A judge has scheduled trial dates for the man accused of killing Sheri Lynn Sabattis of Oromocto First Nation nearly a year ago.
Jared Smith’s trial on a charge of second-degree murder will begin Sept. 14, 2026, Court of King’s Bench Justice Terrence Morrison said Monday.
Sabattis’s body was found inside a home in the Wolastoqey community on April 27.
Family and supporters of Sabattis attended the proceeding Monday at the Burton courthouse, including Oromocto First Nation Chief Shelley Sabattis, the victim’s sister.

Morrison said five weeks would be set aside for the judge and jury trial.
He also scheduled a pre-trial conference for Feb. 8, 2026.
Smith appeared in court by phone from jail, where he’s been held since his arrest shortly after the homicide.
